Putting "Loafing Streams" to Work: The Building of Lay, Mitchell, Martin, and Jordan Dams, 1910-1929
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Alabama Pr (Txt) (June, 1997)
Author: Harvey H. Jackson
Average review score:

Highly valuable
Following upon the success of his "Rivers Of History", Dr. Harvey Jackson has produced a work which concentrates on the construction of several of the leading hyrdo-electric power generating plants in Alabama. Spanning a thirty year period, these ambitious projects, launched by the Alabama Power Company, were the natural consequence of a state experiencing its first significant industrial growth, with all the attendant power demands inherent in such transformations. As in "Rivers Of History", Dr. Jackson underscores the geographic importance of the Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers, in particular, the confluence of which - just above Montgomery - results in the formation of the Alabama River, navigable to the Mobile River then on into Mobile Bay. These two "parent" rivers of the Alabama, with their abundant and steady flow, and their strategic location in central Alabama, provided ideal hosts for the dams and hydro-electric generating facilities highlighted in "Loafing Streams". The growth of the textile industry in central and east Alabama, along with the steady expansion of electric power to small residential areas, were major factors in this 20th Century Alabama hydro-electric revolution. It is worth noting, to those otherwise unaware, that all of these facilities continue to generate power to this day, helping make Alabama wholly self-sustaining in electrical power usage. Like "Rivers Of History", Dr. Jackson utilizes his natural gifts as a writer, along with his proclivity to conduct exhaustive research, to produce yet another highly valuable book for students of Alabama history. While not an official sequel, per se, to "Rivers Of History", "Loafing Streams" could be likened to the literary equivalent of a tributary of the mother book, as the hydro-electric power revolution in Alabama marked a significant milestone in the role of the Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers in Alabama history. The only criticism from this reviewer, is the slightly misleading subtitle: "The Building Of Lay, Mitchell, Martin And Jordan Dams, 1910-1929". The problem here is that the construction of Martin Dam (which created Lake Martin) was not a single-dam construction project, but only one of three dams/facilities in a carefully planned and executed omnibus project. The two missing dams here are Thurlow Dam (at Tallassee, Alabama) and Yates Dam (between Martin and Thurlow), each of which is of equal importance to the whole project. Each of these facilities still produces power through hydro-electric facilities, and the dams at each were so calculated as to allow for the orderly flow of the Tallapoosa, to-wit: Martin Dam, which contains Lake Martin, serves as the catalyst in the river flow. Its gates are lowered and raised as dictated by weather and other circumstances. Downstream, Yates Dam serves as a "check dam", a massive concrete spillway with no gates, containing what is known as the "middle pond". Further downstream, at Tallassee, is Thurlow Dam, whose gates are "tripped" by marked increases in water pressure/levels. Much like Wernher von Braun carefully constructed the various stages of the Saturn V, the engineers of the Alabama Power Company likewise carefully integrated the three facilities of Martin, Yates and Thurlow into one project, each facility serving a vital role in the overall project such that the failure of any one would have severe consequences extending beyond the Tallapoosa, to the Coosa and Alabama. The bond between these three dams cannot be understated, though it is often misunderstood. Accordingly, this reviewer was disappointed with the exclusion of Yates and Thurlow from the subtitle of "Loafing Streams" and strongly feels their inclusion necessary for the sake of accuracy. Nonetheless, the book is an excellent study of this facet of Alabama history and recommends this book. Once again, Dr. Jackson has put forth a work of great and enduring value. We can only look forward to what may, in the future, be forthcoming from this valued historian.

Essential little book...
This "pint sized" book is a wonderful aide in helping those of us who are poor spellers. It is difficult to look up the correct spelling of a word, when you don't know how to spell it correctly, or even close to correctly, to begin with. This book is the answer to that problem.

I only wish it contained more words.

Re-Entry: Making the Transition from Missions to Life at Home

Great Book for People Returning Home
We just returned from Russia when my father gave me this book, and said, 'read it'. That was good advice.

Returning from an extended period in a foreign country can be a difficult experience. This book describes problems you can fall into, and how to avoid them.

It talks about how people fail to notice you've even been gone. Or don't seem to care that much what you did. When you understand these are common experiences, it helps those problems become a lot less personal.

Overall, we've applied the principles of this book, and haven't experienced most of the 'reverse culture shock' that many do. And we've been home nearly a year now, so we'll probably do okay.

Good book to give a returning, or retiring missionary, as a gift.

Red Diamond Regiment: The 17th Maine Infantry, 1862-1865

Authors: William B., Jr Jordan, William B. Jordan Jr, and William B. Jordon

Chamberlain's "20th Maine" had a double!
This book is a "sleeper." I would put it just a shelf below Pullen's Civil War classic, "The 20th Maine." The book doesn't just describe heroic battles, but also camplife, life on the march, and politics at unit and state levels. There are many anecdotes both humorous and tragic. Though no single personality shines through as in the 20th, the regiment itself takes on the character of a damned tough Yankee. When you put this book down, you will have a strong affection for the "old sweats" who brought that haunting smile to Lincoln's last photograph. The Union forever

A Savage Adoration

Penny Jordan is one of the best Harlequin writers...
Dominic acted as if nothing happened. As though Christy's adolescent advances had not aroused his anger and contempt. Thr humiliation of his words had haunted her since and stood between her and all other men.
Her career in London had come to a sudden stop because she had been unwilling to engage in an affair, so her ailing mother's need was reason enough to run home.
The last thing she wanted was to see Dominic Savage. She disliked and despised him. But in the end that proved poor protection against his desires and her own needs.

Like all other penny jordan books, this one is excellent! but im only giving it a 4 because 5 are reserve for my favorites (like payment in love). Penny jordan is one of my favorite harlequin presents author. actually, she's the best harlequin author in my opinion! i especially like her books that have plots involving the guy being secretly in love with the heroine right from the start.

Spike Jones and His City Slickers: An Illustrated Biography
Published in Paperback by Past Times Pub Co (May, 1986)
Author: Jordan R. Young
Average review score:

The Historical Record of the Hysterical Records
This entertaining and enlightening look at 'The King of Corn' dishes up more than enough info for the curious, whether you're a die-hard fan or you're only familiar with his hits like "Cocktails For Two" and "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth." The author thoroughly tackles Spike's life from his childhood (when he was still known as Lindley Armstrong Jones) all the way up to his final days, with coverage of his early work as a session drummer and his many touring live shows. Interviews with several of the surviving City Slickers provide fascinating insight into the man, and three bandmates (funnyman Doodles Weaver, trumpetist George Rock, and drummer Joe Siracusa) get whole chapters dedicated to them. The pages are full of numerous B&W photos, publicity shots, album covers, promotional ads, show posters, and other Jonesiana. The last portion of the book features a thorough discography of his output, from his pre-City Slicker releases to his various 78's to his V-Discs, even including a list of rejected and unrealized projects. It details his numerous radio appearances and his work within both television and feature films. There's also an informative Who's Who section with brief bios on Jones' cohorts such as Billy Barty, Dr. Horatio Q. Birdbath, Sir Fredric Gas, Red Ingle, Freddie Morgan and Del Porter. Radio icon Dr. Demento provides a brief Foreword. Jordan R. Young has since written "Spike Jones Off the Record," an updated look at his career.

The State
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Publishers (March, 1987)
Author: Bill Jordan
Average review score:

Outstanding yet ultimately incomplete treatise
De Jasay presents us with a problem: Constitutions are the highest law of the land and intended to chain down Leviathan, but the constituion is just a document - a government document at that. Constitutions are tantamount to giving all the guns to one person and making them promise not to use them. They are like chastity belts on government growth - and government has the key.

This book is a tour-de-force critique of constitutions. It recognizes them for what they are and nothing more. The book could have been a bit longer, with more specific examples: but perhaps the author would feel it would expose the inherent weakness in his argument. Some countries are more free than others - why? Does it have anything to do with written constitutions? Moral constitutions and cultural restrictions? The force of the people? De Jasay's analysis could have been complemented with an in-depth Public Choice analysis of how politics actually works, rather than a blanket statement denying any effect of constitutions. Even if de Jasay is right about all his points, his lack of perspectives makes the book seem like shoddy scholarship and philosophical ranting at times.

Read this book if you want to understand some of the inherent problems with the idea of constitutional government, then ask yourself why de Jasay is wrong if you think he is. The writing in this book can be pessimistic and nearly lifeless, but several arguments are strong and insightful. It is an important piece of anarchist/libertarian literature and should not be overlooked.

Stated Choice Methods : Analysis and Applications
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (January, 2001)
Authors: Jordan J. Louviere, David A. Hensher, Joffre D. Swait, and Wiktor Adamowicz
Average review score:

a long awaited guide
This book finally provides a comprehensive guide to designing and analysing choice experiments. (Probably a niche market). The authors (and W. Adamowicz, who contributes one chapter and is acknowledged in the inner title page) have been writing the book on choice experiments for many years, in the form of research papers. Until now readers have been left to guess at the intricacies of the mathematics used to construct the surveys, or set off in search of texts and papers on economics and statistical experimental design (particularly factorial design, which is not always well covered), or contact the authors directly. Finally it is all here in one place. This book explains the economics as well as the statistics. Examples are provided in transportation, environment and marketing. A great guide to understanding this area of social research.
