Next Generation Manufacturing Methods and Techniques
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (06 March, 2000)
Authors: James A. Jordan and Frederick J. Michel
Average review score:

Thoughtful Perspectives on Production Process in the Future
Next Generation Manufacturing (NGM) is the name of both this book and the authors' organization so, obviously, Jordan and Michel believe in the concept. The material is based on the U.S.-based Next Generation Manufacturing Project (NGMP) and the International Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) program. Together, these initiatives provide a consistent, worldwide vision for global manufacturing. This book examines that vision with rigor and eloquence. The NGMP identifies the key drivers that shape the future competitive environment and the attributes of a successful competitor in that environment. It then characterizes the capabilities ("imperatives") required to meet the drivers and to thrive. The "imperatives" are grouped into four operational strategies: 1. Building a strong workforce; 2. Developing and implementing advanced knowledge processes; 3. Using advanced manufacturing systems, processes, equipment, and technology; and 4. Integrating competitive strengths. NGM is explored here in three ways: through the eyes of the fictional CEO of a fictional large manufacturing company, as he prepares for a planning meeting with his management team; applying NGM as the CEO sorts through all the issues the management team must consider; and enabling readers to learn by doing - through exercises that simulate real-life business situations in which they are challenged to make decisions rooted in NGM principles. From these exercises, readers see firsthand positive results of applying NGM. Next Generation Manufacturing is must reading, not only for everyone involved in manufacturing from the supervisory level up, but for anyone else who works closely with manufacturing companies. Management consultants and other service providers, for instance, can be much more helpful when they understand what NGM is, how it works, and what it can accomplish with effective management and sufficient capital resources.

Nonlinear ordinary differential equations
Published in Unknown Binding by Clarendon Press ()
Author: D. W. Jordan
Average review score:

Approachable introduction to nonlinear ODE's
Certainly worth the price. Very approachable. I haven't reviewed many similar books -- this text is good enough that I haven't felt the need.

Covers: solution, characterization, and stability analysis, including bifurcation and chaos.

The new 3rd edition is much better and significantly longer than the earlier editions.

North American Cattle-Ranching Frontiers: Origins, Diffusion and Differentiation (Histories of the American Frontier)
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (September, 2000)
Author: Terry G. Jordan
Average review score:

Webb--not!
The book is excellent; takes a complex look at how ranching developed in North America and replaces many myths with facts. A cultural geographer, Jordan is a consummate researcher and explores the way cattle (and people) moved into North America, and how it shaped settlement. If you are like me, and bristle when reading Walter Prescott Webb, because you just KNOW it's not really like that--this book explains what really happened, as cattle and people moved onto the Plains. He provides lots of valuable bibliographic sources, too.

On Both Banks of the Jordan: A Political Biography of Wasfi Al-Tall
Published in Hardcover by Frank Cass & Co (June, 1994)
Author: Asher Susser
Average review score:

Great Job
I have read this book in arabic and want to read it in english , the book talks in detail about the life of wasfi , who is a real Joranian Hero , the book is easy to read and captures most facts about Wasfi.its also has nice pictures that show his life and works. It is weird to see that the only book about this great man in the markets in the middle east is written by an Isreali, shame on whoever tried to hide a person with a personality like this, after all Wasfi is the only true Man in Jordanian History.

On Jordan's Stormy Banks: Personal Accounts of Slavery in Georgia
Published in Paperback by John F. Blair, Publisher (01 October, 2000)
Author: Andrew Waters
Average review score:

A great addition to the series
This collection of Georgia interviews of the WPA slave Narratives (interviews with ex-slaves done in the 1930s) is a fine addition to the series. Pretty good stuff here with excellent storytelling. What's really fascinating is the former slave of Georgia Sen. J.H. Hill (whose name is not given) and his recollection of the Atlanta Riot of 1906 as well as slavery. That's the beauty of this series. These accounts give you a lot of well-told firsthand information that the history books missed. BTW-This is a tad thicker than other volumes of the series.

Once upon the Jordan River
Published in Hardcover by Hats Off Books (August, 2001)
Author: Hajer Saleh
Average review score:

Interestingly complex reading
I enjoyed reading Once Upon the Jordan River. It's an interesting story, very colorful at certain points. For someone with an Arabic background like Hajer Saleh, I think her mastery of the English language is superb. I would like to read more works by her. The book takes the reader into the household of middle-eastern immigrants, depicts the struggles within the family, as well as the confusion of identity. The heroine, Donya, is by no means an ordinary person, but she is very convincingly real. Her journey to her parents' homeland takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions, new faces, habits, and smells. The American reader will learn a lot about the simple facts in an Arab-American girl's life, as well as the complex, shocking, immoral decisions a seventeen year old "muslim" girl might commit. Certain people will condemn the book. Others might embrace its liberation of the soul.

Options Plain & Simple: Successful Strategies Without Rocket Science
Published in Paperback by Financial Times Prentice Hall (08 March, 2000)
Authors: Lenny Jordan and Lenny Jordon
Average review score:

A Few Words From the Author
This book has recently crossed the 5,000 sales mark, despite distribution problems and minimal advertising. The reason is that private investors and market professionals find that it clearly explains what options are, and especially, what they do. It is practical, the language is straightforward, and the math is basic.

I wrote OPS after trading options for ten years in Chicago and London. I have also given many training seminars over the years. The trainees found that all the options books were either too advanced, too theoretical, or poorly written. I finally got fed up and wrote my own.

This book has sold well because it supplies a demand. If you want to read what other investors have said about it, check out amazon.co.uk. And yes, it covers bear market strategies.

Good luck in your trading.

Lenny Jordan

Out of the Dark/Du Plus Lio De L'Oubli: Du Plus Loin De L'Oubli (European Women Writers Series)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (October, 1998)
Authors: Patrick Modiano, Phoebe Ann Porter, Jordan Stump, and Ana M. Matute
Average review score:

A dark and comical novel that is hard to forget.
Like most European students (in movies and novels, anyway), the narrator seldom studies anything, preferring to associate with a fascinating, maybe fatal, woman and her shady boyfriend. He has a hard time figuring out what the pair are up to, and his mystery is thus ours. Fundamentally, this descends from the ancient romances of inscrutable, enchanting women, with the city replacing the forest as setting; but it recalls more immediately French black-and-white films of the 50s like "Diabolique." You can read it as a mystery story or a subtly artful narrative reminiscent of Robbe-Grillet's. It's hard to believe so witty and verbally charming a novel could be a translation.

Overcoming Dyslexia in Children, Adolescents, and Adults
Published in Paperback by Pro Ed (15 May, 2002)
Author: Dale R. Jordan
Average review score:

A must for teachers or dyslexia the invisible handicap
An excellent book. One of the best I have read on the subject. Very well written, easy to understand. Good suggestions for parents and teachers. Every teacher should read this book! Every parent should read this book! Every school trustee should read this book! It should be a book studied in a compulsory course at teachers college since we get unidentified learning disabled students in our classes and we are really not prepared. Dyslexia is an invisible handicap and unfortunately few teachers are qualified to recognise this LD. Your site is very useful because I am the founder and the president of a non profit association for french parents of children with dyslexia and I am always looking for information on dyslexia (high school teacher since 1974) Our daughter has dyslexia. She was tested by 8 different specialists and none mentioned dyslexia. They all said she was gifted, she would grow out of it, she was lazy... this ruined her self-esteeme. Was finally diagnosed at 13. Did multi-sensory method with her. Now she is doing great.
